TOP Things to do: Catalina Island

TOP 5 things to do on your next trip to Catalina Island

Catalina Island, California

1. Get a golf cart and explore the island!

Getting a golf cart and exploring the island is definitely a must do when visiting Catalina Island. You can either rent a golf cart through one of the local businesses or if you are staying at a vacation rental in Hamilton Cove, majority of the rentals come with golf carts for your convenience. The local rental places cost anywhere from $40-80 an hour where the vacation rentals are included in your stay and you have them 24 hours/day. We loved taking advantage of our golf cart, it was a battery operated which was nice we didn’t have to pay for gas, and we could use it anytime! We explored the whole island, from hamilton cove, to Descanso, the museum, into town, and up and around the mountain side. We even ran into some cute deer on our drive, if you happen to find them, a little tip… they love lettuce! We may or may not have made a couple grocery trips for our new animal friends (;

2. Descanso Beach Club

We have become BIG fans of Descanso Beach Club , every time we have visited we make it a point to reserve a chaise lounge and soak up the sun! The beautiful beach club features chaise lounges (only sold in pairs), private cabanas, restaurant, bar, and plenty of beach! Click on the Descanso link above to see pricing if you too want to lounge in style. The lounge includes, food and beverage service, smoothies upon arrival that are delicious!!! And of course, complimentary bottled water and beach towels. The service here is nothing short of excellent, we would recommend to anyone and everyone! Also make sure to buy some floaties at the local store right next to the bar, enjoy the clear waters, and float your worries away…

3 & 4. Jet Skiing and Parasailing

If you read my HOW TO SAVE: Catalina Island, then you already know to check out vacation packages when traveling to this gem of an island. HOWEVER… Like I said… We would not recommend booking with Catalina Tours, we booked with them a couple years ago and we will never be booking with them again. Our package that we purchased included ferry tickets, jet skiing, and parasailing! The experience was amazing to say the least, the customer service from Catalina tours… not so much. But I will point out that these companies that offer the package deals are just booking/travel agents that book with activity companies. So although we did not like Catalina Tours, the companies we were booked through for the jet skiing and parasailing were great!

We first did parasailing, and at first, not gonna lie I was terrified! But it was the smoothest, most peaceful flight. The guys driving the boat and setting up the parasail were awesome! (So sad I can’t remember their names) When we were up in the air, you couldn’t hear a thing, it was so serene, and we felt like we had the world to ourselves for a moment. We even got to see dolphins swimming below and showing off for us, that made my day of course!

Next we went jetskiing… and this is where we unfortunately decided on our bad rating for Catalina tours… The activity itself and the company was great though! We were the only ones booked that day so we had free range of the ocean! NO guided tour, just stay within sight of the boat is what we were told, and it was so much fun!

5. Hamilton Cove Amenities

If you plan on staying in hamilton cove, there is plenty to do around the quiet resort like area, you can get away with staying there your entire trip and still have a blast! There’s a swimming pool, jacuzzi, private beach, mini gold course and putting green, tennis courts, clear waters filled with lots of colorful fish for snorkeling, and of course almost all rentals include a golf cart.
